Irish-bred horses account for over 30% of Land Rover Kentucky CCI4* Entries

General April 12, 2018

A total of nineteen Irish-bred event horses feature on the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event entries list for 2018, accounting for over 30% of the CCI4* competition.

Great Britain’s Oliver Townend has a total of three entries and all are Irish Sport Horses; Cooley Master Class, Cooley SRS & MHS King Joules. Fellow GBR rider William Fox-Pitt is entered with the Irish-bred Fernhill Pimms.

Bay My Hero, ridden by Fox-Pitt, was the last Irish Sport Horse to win the CCI4* event in 2014. Prior to that it was the Irish Sport Horse Connaught in 2008, under USA rider Phillip Dutton.

Ireland’s two representatives Sam Watson (Horseware Ardagh Highlight) and Tim Bourke (Luckaun Quality) both ride Irish Sport Horses at this year’s event.

Of Buck Davidson’s three entries for 2018, two are Irish-bred – Park Trader, Copper Beach. USA’s Kim Severson and Irish Sport Horse Cooley Cross Border are hot of the back of a second place finish in the WEG 2018 CIC3* Test event. This will be the first CCI4* event for Cooley Cross Border – the highest-ranked Irish Sport Horse in the individual WBFSH rankings in 2017 (helping the Irish Sport Horse Studbook to win the coveted Eventing Studbook rankings for an incredible 22nd time in 24 years).

In 2017 Irish-bred horses accounted for 50% of the top 10 placings at the Kentucky CCI4*. Then Sixteen Year Old High Kingdom (ISH)(TIH), ridden by Great Britain’s Zara Tindall, finished on their dressage score taking 3rd place. Hot on their heels in 4th place was Phillip Dutton (USA) & 18 year old Mr Medicott (ISH)(TIH), showing that his age was not slowing him down and picking up the Roger Haller Memorial Trophy for the Rolex/USEF CCI4* Eventing National Championship in the process. Mr Medicott (ISH)(TIH) and Karen O’Connor (USA) placed 4th.

The Irish-bred Super Socks BCF ridden by Matthew Brown (USA) took 6th place, followed by Fernhill Fugative (ISH) & Phillip Dutton (USA) in 7th position. Delux Z (ISH) & Kurt A Martin (USA) finished in 9th position and are also entered to contest the 2018 event.
